Long Term Evolution of Magnetic Turbulence in Relativistic Collisionless Shocks: Electron-positron Plasmas
We study the long term evolution of magnetic fields generated by a collisionless relativistic ee shock which is initially unmagnetized. Our 2D particle-in-cell numerical simulations show that downstream of such a Weibel-mediated shock, particle distributions are close to isotropic, relativistic Maxwellians, and the magnetic turbulence is highly intermittent spatially. The non-propagating magnet...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of Electron-Acoustic Waves in Electron Plasmas
Electron-acoustic waves have strong linear Landau damping, but are observed as nonlinear BGK modes in experiments with pure electron plasmas. The waves have phase velocity vφ ≈ 1.3v̄, in agreement with theory, and the longest wavelength BGK states exhibit only relatively weak damping. Shorter wavelength modes exhibit a strong decay instability which can be experimentally controlled.
متن کاملQuantum effects on the dispersion of ion acoustic waves
The longitudinal response function for an isotropic, nonrelativistic, thermal plasma with the quantum recoil included exactly is used to generalize the dispersion relation for ion acoustic waves and the absorption coefficient for Landau damping to include the quantum recoil. The results are compared to recent treatment of the dispersion relation derived using a fluid theory with the quantum eff...
متن کاملNonlinear Landau Damping of Alfven Waves in a High ß Plasma *
To Professor Arnulf Schlüter on his 60th Birthday A study is made of the nonlinear damping of parallel propagating Alfven waves in a high ß plasma. Two circularly polarized parallel propagating waves give rise to a beat wave, which in general contains both a longitudinal electric field component and a longitudinal gradient in the magnetic field strength. The wave damping is due to the interacti...
متن کاملTransport Properties of Quark and Gluon Plasmas
The kinetic properties of relativistic quark-gluon and electron-photon plasmas are described in the weak coupling limit. The troublesome Rutherford divergence at small scattering angles is screened by Debye screening for the longitudinal or electric part of the interactions. The transverse or magnetic part of the interactions is effectively screened by Landau damping of the virtual photons and ...
